Frequently Asked Questions about Hypnosis
Is Hypnosis dangerous?
No. There are no negative side-effects of Hypnosis.
Can I be hypnotised?
Hypnosis is a very natural state of relaxation that we pass through several times a day. Studies at Stanford University found that ninety percent of people can enter hypnosis with the help of a hypnotist. Many hypnotists feel that this study was somewhat limited; it employed only a small number of techniques and with the greater number of techniques available to the modern hypnotist, the hypnotic trance is more readily accessible. The only people who do not go into hypnosis are those who, for any number of reasons do not want to. You cannot be hypnotised against your will.
I have had great success hypnotizing my clients; everyone who comes to my office for help does so willingly. A willing client with a desire to change and a certified hypnotist with whom they feel comfortable is a great recipe for success.
Can you make me do a thing, which I do not want to do?
Put simply 'No'. It is possible that you have seen 'stage' hypnotists getting people to do silly things under the influence of hypnosis, but the reality of the situation is that the people on stage want to be there. In hypnosis you accept the suggestions you want and reject the ones you don't.
Will I remember it?
Some clients remember everything and some only remember bits and pieces. There may be some sessions where you feel you remember almost every word and then the next session you remember pieces here and there. Again it depends on the client.
Will this be done in one session?
Some treatments only take a single session; most take longer. I will be able to give you an estimate on the phone or by e-mail how many sessions are typically needed for your project or goal on which you wish to work.
Will I go back into my past?
Not necessarily. Regression is a technique employed by most hypnotists but not automatically; most treatments do not require regression.
Is Hypnosis medically approved?
Yes, since 1958 in the United States and Great Britain. The American Medical Association, the American Psychiatric Association and the British Medical Association have all adopted hypnosis as a viable therapeutic tool. (In Canada there are currently no regulations regarding Hypnosis) When I compare this to my medical background as an advanced care paramedic... the U.S. had advanced care paramedics in the mid 1960's. Our first advanced care paramedics in the nation's capital rolled onto the streets in 1995. We seem to be a little slower to embrace the inevitable.
In what areas is hypnosis helpful?
WE only address a few of the most common areas on this website, but Hypnosis is well known to be helpful in many areas. Really any area in your life were you want to make a positive change, reach a goal, de-stress; hypnosis can help. It truly is like a massage for your mind.
Is hypnosis covered under my insurance?
Certain aspects of hypnosis may be covered by some extended health plans. I am a member of The Academy of Naturopaths and Naturotherapists.
Do people in hypnosis go to sleep or become unconscious?
No. My clients are physically relaxed but in a heightened state of focused awareness. In other words every muscle will be relaxed; you will feel very comfortable; you are in the state before sleep.
